Ommatophobia

You find yourself targeted by her, eyes wide and glowing like saucers. The figure deemed Pachiri-chan is indistinct, more a suggestion of a form than anything tangible, and at first it's easy to mistake her for nothing but a strange shadow, or a trick of the eye. But let your eyes linger, and she stays in focus, swaying in a nonexistent breeze. A grin stretches across her face, straining at the corners.

The next time you glance back you swear she's closer than she was before, and a chill runs down your spine.

Kakorrahaphobia

Pachiri-chan plays a surprisingly fair game. The only time she closes the distance is when your back is turned to her, and even then she will often bide her time. If she is ever caught moving, Pachiri-chan disappears from sight and the game is considered to be won, though winning the game does not exempt one from being targeted a second, or even third time. Only her target is able to see her.

As Pachiri-chan makes her way closer, the game intensifies. Lights around you may begin to flicker, or a previously balanced stack of items may come crashing to the ground. This is child's play compared to what she seems to derive greater glee from, however. Distorted noises creep through the air all around you, whispers and giggles that you can't make out, overlapping each other with increased intensity, then fading out of existence, only to return again. The shadow of a hand may reach out towards you, then vanish the moment you notice it.

One particular thing of note is her tendency to target those experiencing negative emotions.

Haptephobia

The air around you turns ice cold, and that chill encompasses your entire being. You find yourself unable to move, a talon-like grip on your shoulders that manifests itself into that grinning face, directly in front of you.

Pachiri-chan has won.

[ Appearing on the screen is a pensive looking Ryoko. She's been kind of busy, and it's clear from the background that she's not in her house at the time being, the shot of a clear sky visible behind her head and the sounds of the ocean around her. ]

Hey, it's Asakura. It's been kind of a while... and we've already passed the halfway point of Summer, so I thought it'd be nice if we had a get-together at the beach. It'll be nice to see everyone again while we're not getting upset at each other for anything. I've been busy setting things up, so if anyone wants to come by, they're more than welcome. Even if you don't really want to see anyone, I'd still appreciate you showing up for a little bit. Just to say hi.

[ Part of her wonders if it's a little desperate sounding. But, given the state of things, she wants to see who she can. ]

It'll be later on tonight. Don't worry about food, I'll get started on making things up when I get there. I've got more than oden on the way, so you won't go hungry!

[ And with that, she shuts off the mirror. ]

[ Ryoko's gone a little more all out than she did last year. There's a grill set up with beef skewers, as well as a few picnic tables set up to place food on. She's already got a lot set up-- which yes, includes chilled melons that she got at a really good discount! There's chilled juice and water in a cooler, and more than a few beach balls set up.

There's also a composite notebook on one of the tables, with a pen sticking out of it. Inside of it are half-scribbled together notes, as far as some kind of speech.

It looks like merriment and relaxation isn't the only reason Ryoko's calling for everyone to show up. ]

Mid-afternoon on the 17th, every last mirror in Nyoi-cho springs to life with a static screech. The picture displayed is muddled, a mixture of television noise and the slightest outline of a nondescript figure on its knees, hands clasped in what appears to be a prayer.

It speaks at last, voice equally hard to make out. The volume fades in and out among the static, and it sounds neither human nor robotic, adult nor child, with the slightest musical cadence to its tone.

I'm...... .....I didn't mea.... sor.... ...ease forgive m.... ...ying to hel... ....an fix thi.... .....ake it alrig....

I promise.

Then, the broadcast disappears.

The Return

Nightmares appear that night, again. They're small, and could easily be mistaken for mere familiars, but most importantly for the weary magi is their ability to clear gems. The townsfolk are restless the next day, and they frown as they discuss their quality of sleep. Whereas before, they slept without a care, the last night was dreadful and wrought with unpleasant dreams. It's simply not fair, they proclaim, all they wanted was another night of such wonderful sleep.

Once again, life continues on as before, without any indication that anything was ever wrong in the first place.

July Event Start

The sun is shining brightly in the sky, the flowers in the park are in full bloom, and cicadas buzz to bring in the summer weather. In every way, it's a wonderful day...

Perhaps, almost too picturesque of a day.

But what does it matter, in the end? You aren't worried; it's a well earned rest after the months of turmoil and heartbreak. People have come and gone, some in more peaceful ways than others, but for once you feel like everything is working itself out.

Rose-Tinted Lives

When the sun sets, they don't appear. The air is still, and a lone cicada cries into the night. It doesn't bring forth any worry, a night off from a thankless job is far from a bad thing, and it means the townsfolk are having a stress-free night. You go about your life as normal.

At first, you don't even notice the darkening of your gem. It's a natural part of being a magi, and with the normal abundance of Nightmares, keeping track of a soul gem's cleanliness was more of a formality than something to focus on. There's bound to be a Nightmare soon, so everything would work itself out.

Eventually though, it's impossible to ignore. Between the lack of Nightmares and the steady discoloration of gems, there's no way a town with so many magi could remain sustainable.

You reassure yourself that it'll all work itself out, somehow.

Golden Shells

Later in the week, a girl who may be familiar to some can be found in Higashi-ku, rabbit-eared headphones hanging around her neck. Despite the school term being over, she wears a modified school uniform, and is frequently nose-deep into one thing or another on her cell phone. Her gaze is focused, but she's able to navigate the streets with only a scarce glance upwards.

She wanders throughout the park and the beach, stooped down to admire the various flowers, or picking up shells to stash in a small bag within her purse. She carefully examines each shell beforehand, placing some back down with a deft hand. Others appear to pass her test, and are gently stowed away. Anyone who approaches her will be met with a beaming smile, but there's a distinct crease in her brow when she's alone.

A Peaceful Calm...?

Nyoi-cho yet again falls into peace, a pleasant calm hanging over the town as the cicadas begin to announce the incoming summer. The children of the town seem especially anxious for the school term to end, rushing out in droves to the park after their club activities before they head home for the nights.

All seems well; Nightmares are less frequent, and magi will find it quite simple to deal with them each night. The night air is crisper than its ever been, and during the days the wind blows just enough to take the edge off the rising heat while the sun shines bright in the sky. Townsfolk remark at how idyllic life feels; as if all of their troubles have melted away.

Surely, this feeling cannot last long.

An unspoken rule of the game, it would seem, is that all orders will lift when said order has been fulfilled by at least five magi. This means that, even though some of the Kings have specified that they wish for all magi to carry out their order, it is not actually necessary for every last magi to do so in order to avoid a punishment!
If you would like to have your character try for an order, but you see that its required number has already been reached, that's okay! Don't let that deter you; feel free to go ahead and head over to the masterlist anyway.

Mirrors

[Yet again, some asshole has set up a laptop in front of the mirror to play a video.

This time, the video seems to start on a hideous rainbow background with clip-art suns and moons, with a puppet finally appearing that appears to be dressed in a maid cafe outfit that some fuckwit stole from the business. The words "NYOI-CHO-KUN-CHAN-SAN" slowly appear over the intro, with what appears to be a pencil with strips of raw bacon attached to it appears in Nyoi-cho-kun-chan-san's hand as her 'wand'.

Then we jump cut to Bro Strider, putting on an exaggerated fearful face for a good ten seconds before he actually shouts something.]

Nyoi-cho-kun-chan-san! The town is in trouble! You need to get your shit together and help!

[Then the screen cuts to Nyoi-cho-kun-san, laid on the couch in a position to imply depression or anxiety and fear, arms wobbling off the couch, just so done with the world. 'She' mumbles little whining words, not any that could be understood. Just pure nonsense, like this whole display is.

Cut back to Bro Strider drinking a mountain dew, then acting like he forgot he was on camera as he fumbles to put it away.]

Seriously, Nyoi-cho-kun-chan-san! If you don't do anything no one will! You've got to get up and get moving or the whatever the fuck is going to destroy this shithole.

[A beat. And then an exaggerated fear reaction.]

No Nyoi-cho-kun-chan-san! Not towards the fire you dumb fuck!

[And that's when there's a scene of the puppet 'flying' onto one of the burners on Bro's stove, which just happens to be on. The scenes of Nyoi-cho-kun-chan-san burning are interspersed with Bro looking properly horrified and fitting music.

Eventually, Bro just pulls his sword out to scrape the puppet off the burner. Then he gets a pan and scrambles some eggs in that pan on the same burner. Then he makes some bacon. Then he puts both in a blender along with the rest of his mountain dew and mixes that shit up nice before going back to sit down and watch some TV.

For those who bother, there is just fifteen extra minutes of the video of Bro just watching TV and drinking his awful smoothie.]

Bro's House, Closed to Osomatsu

[Bro didn't usually take on people to train. It wasn't his style. But Osomatsu, at least, seems like a relatively cool dude unlike a lot of these assholes. If he can help the dude get some serious training and survival in here, hell. It's a win for everyone, far as he's concerned. Just another way for Bro Strider to bless the fucking world.

A. In front of Rue's house

[When Rue walks out of her house this morning, she is greeted by a package. And she is less than thrilled.

Now, she's heard of people getting stuff before, but frankly, Rue cannot think of anything she would like to receive from her home. Just a place of bad memories and Rue tainting the only good things in her life with her own stupidity.

So if any Magi pass by you might notice a girl walking down the sidewalk and not looking where she is going, as she is too busy glaring accusingly at a neatly wrapped package in her hands. And holding it as far away from herself as possible, like she was afraid it was going to bite her.]

B. Park

[So Rue finally opened up her gift and you know what?

Totally wrong. Finally this place did something worthwhile. Rue had at least been able to keep up her daily practice as her magi transformation came with what she needed as far as wearable gear was concerned, and the ability to transform into it with little fuss was a pleasant convenience. It was a bit too... costume-like to really feel comfortable in simple practice sessions, however.

Her old practice outfit, though? Well, she'd be willing to sacrifice the convenience of transforming in and out of costume for the freedom of movement her usual leotard offered her.

While she was able to summon the barre needed for her basic training in her home, the area offered to her didn't feel quite sufficient enough for grand jetés and the like. So, as she has been used to doing in lieu of an actual studio, Rue heads to the park. It may not offer much in the way of quiet practice, but Rue was a performer anyway. She didn't mind the stares or the people.

Though Gold Crown Town had only offered her tragedy upon tragedy, Rue finds herself a bit nostalgic - for the time where she had no idea what her history as a crow was, at least. What had she been studying before things became so irrevocably ruined in her life? Before she had to be the Raven Princess and cast aside her identity as Rue?

Ah, right. She remembers now.

Giselle.

Her first few attempts were riddled with pauses and uncertainty as the memory of routine slowly comes back to her, but soon she's going through the above choreography with ease. She may not have a way to play the composition that goes with it, but Rue doesn't need music to guide her footwork. She's going through the motions as if she knew it backward and forward all along. A few passerbys mistaking her for a street performer drop some money on her neatly folded towel nearby, but Rue will make it very clear she is not doing this for money!!! If she catches them, she's quick to stop what she's doing and insist they take it back, you mustn't pay for such an unpolished performance!!

Girl has no business sense, even now. Still, she's collected a decent amount from those she didn't catch dropping coins for her. Other than that, she's so into her dancing she might not notice you passing by so close there.

A collision may be imminent. Hope she doesn't kick you in the face.]

As delightful as it is to receive something from home, I find myself in need of someplace specific. Am I to just hope it appears out of thin air like the items I received, or is there a particular way to go about it?

[From those horrendous looking metal carriages to the impossibly tall buildings, Gaston is so far out of his element that if he hadn't had a wish granted by a rodent he would swear he was dreaming. [This Nightmare business could be a real pain in the ass sometimes, but Jimmy was finding more and more that it could also be a source of comfort; in a foreign world where, it seemed, he could never go long without something new and strange being thrown at him, it was a familiar constant. More than that, it was a problem that he could solve with his fists, that he could throw brute force at and resolve. That was rare too, and Jimmy had begun to appreciate Nightmare-hunting more and more for the simplicity, the lack of moral greys or excessive planning and forethought involved. It was a good way of expelling stress; carefreely being able to whale on an enemy in front of him without worrying about far-reaching consequences down the line meant he could just let all his pent-up aggressions out.

Tonight, the nightmarescape he finds himself in is dim, poorly lit. A narrow path of stone is at his feet, surrounded at all sides by murky waters that smelled of something rotten. He has to traverse the path carefully to not accidentally end up knee-deep in the disgusting liquid, and that means that tonight, he has to fight and move very carefully. He takes his steps slowly and purposefully, squinting into the darkness.

Ahead of him, the shuffling of feet can faintly be heard.]

[Of course. Of course a sewer-themed nightmarescape would have rat familiars. That's just absolutely typical, isn't it? This being a Nightmare, though, the rats weren't your normal, everyday rats, either. Instead, they looked like a grotesque combination of a rat and a spider; a fusion experiment gone horribly awry. If one peered closely at their thick, stringy black fur, they would see eight red eyes peering back at them. They scuttled along the floors with eight legs, and where a rat would have elongated rat fangs peeking out from their mouth, these familiars had large mandibles.

Disgusting.

Jimmy has his slingshot summoned, firing off a few shots of energy pellets into the distance. A corner of his lips curls into a smirk as he sends a group of the creatures scattering with satisfying squeaks of terror.

Unbeknownst to him, a brilliant blue king's cape has materialized over his shoulders. He feels fantastic.]

[ B.B. has had enough time at this point to take a look around what passes for Nyoi-cho, the remnants of whatever city it used to be being assimilated into their own. Now their little, small town was a ward of an even bigger town, and she couldn't help but laugh about it. Nyoi-cho was theirs, for better or for worse, and now they had to share it with others. More specifically, they had to share it with Kaneko Kouzai, who had already staked her claim to Minami-ku and made her threat loud and clear.

On the bulletin board there's a message written, that is soon broadcasted onto the mirrors for a good thirty seconds: ]

Higashi-ku is ours.

[ Underneath it is smaller writing, and the mirror post is framed well enough that there's no actual way to read it. However, if anyone goes to the board to look at it, they'll see it in full: ]

Are you going to keep it that way, or are you fine with anyone coming in to lay waste to it AND you? How willing are you to lay down and die?

[ The truth was, she was bored. Yes, it was nice and peaceful and she had plenty of time to play in the park with Harry, and train a group of magi to not be useless when the time comes, but she had gotten so used to the idea of something massive happening after the past few months that this time of respite was starting to get to her. Everyone was still pouting and simmering after everything that happened, and she'd cast the one true enemy she had made in town away to go do her own thing.

What was a girl to do with what felt like so much time on her hands?

Early morning on May 18th she can be found in Higashi-ku's park, sitting on a blanket and letting her puppy run around free around her. She's writing down notes in her notebook, and beside her is a muffin, surrounded by apple slices that she'll occasionally stop to pop one into her mouth. She's looking carefree, humming a tune to herself as Harry happily yips nearby. The weather was always so nice in Nyoi-cho, and sometimes it felt better than being cooped up inside all day. Granted, she had to make an extra effort to keep an eye on what was going on, but that didn't matter.

But, what was the point of having these other wards if you didn't go check them out?

Hence why Bonnie makes the trip to Kita-ku in the afternoon, looking about the shops. Decked out in a different attire: a light red zip-up jacket (with a hoodie of course) and a long red skirt, with her normal barrette clipped right in her hair. She was mostly looking around just to take in the sights again, this time a lot less scared looking, trying to determine what she even had money to buy. Yes, it'd make sense to just steal things, but she had started to figure there were consequences to most actions around here.

She stops at a storefront for a second, and glances down at her phone. It was getting late... in swiping around, she swipes over to the camera, getting a good glimpse at her face. It was a little funny. She was still growing and getting a tad older, but she was still as cute as a button! As stressful and aggravating Nyoi-cho as a whole was, as she smiled into the camera, it hadn't looked any brighter in a while.

Holding the camera up, she tilts her head just at the right angle and beams, taking the shot. She pulls the phone back towards her and cups her chin. ]

Hmm.... I bet I can make a cuter smile than that. [ And she's right back to it. ]

[It could have been avoided. Really, it could have, but when it comes to logical choices Abdul will be the first to admit that he is not going to make logical choices about several very specific people or things. Those paying attention will probably realize one of those things takes the form of a sliver-haired Frenchmen while the other...

Okay, he knows this new familiar isn't his Stand, but considering the shape it takes is the one his Stand had when he was somewhere around 7-8 years old, he can't help but feel more attached to it than he probably should be. It's like having an old friend back, and while said friend does draw on his soul gem's power to stay manifest, Abdul tends to keep his gem very well maintained anyway. He is not concerned about the drain, or it seems, about letting this old 'friend' wander around the house. The familiar can't seem to go more than three feet from him. What trouble can it cause?

Mistake number one.

Mistake two is becoming so caught up in reading that he doesn't keep checking on his little friend. Magician's Red's main personality trait at that time had been the same has his own--curiosity--and the familiar doesn't seem to have any personality of its own aside from what Abdul remembers about his Stand. Let the little creature explore. It will be fine.

Mistake three? Birds like shiny things which is why this small familiar who looks like some kind of cute, fluffy baby phoenix is staring into the mirror by Abdul's bed like it's the most amazing thing he has ever seen. For a while, he just blinks at it, tilting his head and making a soft whistling sound. When there is no response, he slowly raises one clawed finger to tap at the reflective surface.

Wow, how coincidental that is just how a mirror is turned on to broadcast a message. Whoops!

Welcome, Nyoi-Cho to the amazing, live Firebird Channel, currently playing the smash hit "Watch the Baby Phoenix as He Watches You!" and in periodically interrupted by the hit commercial "Oh Dear! There He Goes Turning it Off and On for Fun Again!"

[Who knows why Abdul doesn't just dismiss the familiar after he shoos it away from the mirror. There is a good chance he is too embarrassed that the little creature just mirror spammed the whole city, and he is more focused on apologizing than dismissing him. In any event, the familiar--apparently aiming to do any small child or creature proud--wastes no time having something else catch his curiosity. This time? There is a little box on the nightstand. It has a shiny thing on the front of it just like the big shiny thing. There are weird pushy-iny things too that make little beep sounds when pressed. Unfortunately for Kaneko, the first thing she is going to hear when the call connects is several button beeps, followed by a soft trilling , a louder rustling, and then Abdul's startled voice when he realizes just what those beeps on the edge of his hearing are.]

[Yeah, okay this is curious shiny thing two and this one is small. He's not giving it up so easily. There is a squawking and then the sound of feet running.

Nightmare Hunting - Offensive

[Pokey will admit. Killing familiars right now is proving to be really therapeutic.

He has one caught in his dome with him. Usually that'd be bad news considering how limited his range of attack was, let alone movement. But the teleportation has helped that a bit. Because this teleporting isn't limited to just shoving or pulling people out of the way. Doesn't have to be just that gentle.

Right now, Pokey seems to be using his teleport power to slam the Nightmare against the sides of his dome, hard. Again and again and again. It looks like the thing is nearly defeated anyway, certainly has little fight in it.

That doesn't stop Pokey from still going hard at it. At something. If just for a moment.

It's just a familiar after all. Who cares about the piece of shit.]

Y'know... This has been bugging me for a while.

Knowing all that I know about pacts -- contracts, whatever the hell you wanna call them -- I've gotta wonder just what in the hell that little rat is playing at. It's forbidden magic where I'm from, and I'm talking the ultimate sin here, none of that black magic necromancy is bad for you bullshit.

There's supposed to be a cost. From what I remember, forging a contract requires a sacrifice from the human party and the life of the beast is tied to it. And vice-versa, so anybody thinking about killin' him should maybe think twice. But in exchange you get a second chance at life and supernatural abilities.

So it means the requirements. But the question I've got is what price did we pay for it? Can living in our own worlds count, or is there something we're all missing but haven't noticed... and is there more than one beast making these pacts, because we've sure as shit got some dead girls on our hands but more Magi keep pouring in.

After a moment, he begins to speak.]

I am Captain Gaston of the Crusaders of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado.

[Wow, that was a mouthful, and it's not like half of those words really have any meaning to anyone in this world. Still, they sound impressive, don't they? And he must establish his credentials first and foremost.]

I arrived in this world not long ago, but I've already received a briefing on the situation from your former leader. As I understand it, the current state of affairs is... [pitiful, unacceptable, dismal] ...unpleasant.

Kyuubey is nowhere to be found, and it is my understanding that as of now, we lack strong leadership to look to. We stand divided.

[He furrows his brows and, raising his voice to a shout reserved for inciting someone's spirits during an inspirational speech, continues to speak.]

But our mission remains unchanged. We have been handpicked - chosen for our potential and recognized as the most elite soldiers from our worlds [well, one of the two, anyway; he's heard about how some of the magi had zero combat experience before they came here, and boy is he ever unenthused about it] - to carry out a duty, and we still have that duty to fulfill as magi. Let us not bring shame to the title of "magi" by forgetting that.

In-between all the energies we exhaust on pointless bickering and dawdling, we would do well to remember that we all have a common enemy - and that enemy is the Nightmares.
